This isn’t Thanksgiving, but because I wear a turkey hat, I am posting it with this. I participated in the Rich Dalessandro Turkey Trot 5K. I have run this before, and we have run it as a family. This was the final year for this specific 5K, but I was happy to hear that the nonprofit Rescuer is going to be running it. This organization is works to help people with medical expenses. Sandy’s mom made some turkey stocking hats one year, so that is what we pull out to wear each year. It makes if a more light-hearted experience!
My strategy (since I wasn’t in shape enough to run the whole distance) was to run a minute walk a minute and try to push to the top of the hard hills. It worked. I felt pretty good at the end and my time was respectable – 35 minutes flat; 11:16 min/mile. Here are a few moments from the race…
Thanksgiving is one of my absolute favorite holidays. Why? For all the reasons. I love the Thanksgiving service at our church – singing favorite hymns, hearing people’s stories of gratitude, and the atmosphere. That is followed by the auction. It is fun to see what people create. This year, Madison made small gnome ornaments, Ellie mixed up some chocolate chip cookies, and I made Twix cookies (which looked beautiful until I transported them and the chocolate slid) and a certificate for 6 months of quick breads. They all sold well. The money raised (a little over $18,000 this year) went to the Murza family (refugees from Ukraine), the Edwards family (remodeling their garage for more space as their son with multiple needs grows), Lauren Hicks (a young girl in the community who was in a terrible motorcycle accident), and Mennonite Disaster Service. I love sitting with friends, bidding for fun, and watching others do the same. From there, we head to my mom and dad’s for family Thanksgiving. The food is always good, the conversation ranges from serious to silly, the activity (crossnet with a sprinkle of wrestling) to get moving if you feel inclined, and sitting around in recovery mode.
On Friday this year, Gloria had a group of family in the area over; there were 11 of us that made it. We had seen David, Marianne, and Erin recently, but Steve, Juiie, and Zach were a nice addition to the gathering. Zach lives in Bluffton now, so we don’t get to see him much. The highlight for the girls is that Erin brought her puppy, Muffy. Such a tiny thing – and so quiet; I don’t think we heard a bark or hardly a growl. So different from our white, raging beast.
