So it has come to my favorite time of year – fall. I love the cooler weather. I love the changing leaves. I love everything about fall except for the darkness that sticks around til 7 or 8 in the morning and comes again by 7 in the evening.
This year, we crammed a lot of stuff into last weekend to kick off fall. We went to the our annual viewing of cross country at the Wayne-Holmes Invitational. It is a good place to watch the runners. The weather has been fairly cooperative – drizzly one year, pretty cool another year, and warmish a different year. The girls go and tolerate it because we have started letting them bring hot chocolate in fancy travel coffee mugs; they feel and look quite grown up. I took off from there to go to see my niece, Sophie, play volleyball in her tournament. (I also sat on the bench and gave her mom, who was filling in as the coach, my very few nuggets of coaching wisdom.) Her team lost the first game, won the next, and then I had to hit the road. Jeremy and I decided last minute to make an appearance at the Moreland Agricultural Days because his aunt and uncle had helped out with it. So, we took off for there next. The girls enjoyed sitting on the different tractors. This one is affectionately dubbed “The Monster”. It was Jeremy’s grandpa’s creation. His uncle, David, recently fixed it back up.
There were others that were fun to sit on as well.
From there we made it home in time for me to whip up my contributions to the Fall Party at Luke and Steph’s. I took two new things this year – Buffalo Chicken Wraps and Sopaipilla Cheesecake Bars. Both were good, if I do say so myself. The girls had a blast. They are old enough now to just take off with their cousins and friends from church to hang out and play in the woods. The hardest part is wrestling them to the table to get some food in their bellies! The next day, we did the Fall Party again, but this time with the SYF. It was a relaxing, hang out time. Again, the girls took off to the woods pretty quickly after we arrived.
This past weekend, we built a fire for s’mores on Friday night and went pumpkin picking on Sunday. Pumpkin picking should probably happen somewhere other than the Buehlers parking lot, but when all the fun places close an hour after you have this brainstorm, you take what you can get. Plus, Madison (our picky pumpkin picker) would never have managed in a whole field of pumpkins! Maybe in a week or so, we will venture over to Ramseyer Farms – the fall fun mecca – to slide on slides and other fun things.
On Saturday, my 7th grade volleyball team competed in the county tournament to end the season. I would like to say I coached them to the championship game, but alas, I did not. We had a bad draw and ended up in the top bracket with the top, undeafeated team. We played Waynedale in the first game. The girls were amazing! I think it is the best they have ever played. We played 20 minutes later against Smithville, 14-0 in the league. We were coming off a high that had sucked a lot of our energy, and I think they were a little defeated about the even the idea of playing Smithville. We did not play well Overall, the season was a positive one for me. And I think for the girls as well. I only have these “Fun and Funky Friday” pictures from the last day of practice to share. I should have had one taken after our win against Waynedale, but it was not on my mind at the time.
