Stan Hywet Hall

Sandy invited the girls and me to go with her to Stan Hywet Hall in Akron.  It had been years since I had been there, and I had never taken the girls.  So, we did it!

Stan Hywet is an estate built between 1912 and 1915 where the Seiberling family lived.  The Seiberlings founded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company… and made a fortune.  You can now tour the home, walk the grounds, and visit the gardens.  It is a beautiful place.  I can only imagine what it took to maintain it (and to maintain it today).  They had 16-20 domestic employees and 9-12 estate employees while they lived in the home.  There are 14 full baths and 9 half=baths, 18 bedrooms, 23 fireplaces, 3 elevators, and 21,455 panes of glass!  The home itself is 64,500 square feet (about 1 football field).  Extravagance for sure!

The girls were in awe/fear of the large bear skin (head and teeth included) that sat in this room on the floor.

The formal family dining room.

Followed by the butler’s pantry.  I like the light in here.

This is the breakfast room … because it would be boring to eat in the same place all day long, right?

They also had a specific room for flower arranging.  This is still used today.

The indoor pool was pretty cool to look at.  It was called “The Plunge” and it could be filled to various levels, 8 feet being the deepest.

Then, we went upstairs to the bedrooms, which were very different depending on what the kids wanted.

We ended by going outside around the lagoon and into the different gardens.

This led to the girls wanting a few posed photos.

Great day.  Thanks, Sandy!
