You know when you indulge at the Advent breakfast and take a photo by the beautiful Christmas tree at church that the countdown is on. So, here is a run-down of how we have started to celebrate and anticipate….
Day 1 – Random Act of Kindness… given $25 each, purchase canned goods for the drive at school. They had fun trying to get as close as possible to the target price by estimating. They were within a dollar each I think!
Day 2 – Unwrap a gift… we all opened wintery, flannel pj bottoms. (Also, and unrelated to the Advent calendar, I took my annual shopping trip with mom and my sisters. We shop more on line and spend more time eating, although we also wander through stores for about 8 hours in the process.)
Day 3 – Make a decorative craft… we made these pretty candles holders. I am hoping we can reuse them from year to year.
Day 4 – Check out books from the library… headed to the Orrville library this year since we were in the midst of the contacts and glasses appointments
Day 5 – Attend a choir concert… it was a great time listening to them sing. Mrs. Carr does a fantastic choosing songs and getting kids to sing and project their voices.
Day 6 – Indulge in a cupcake from Faithful Little Cupcake. Again, back to Orrville, to pick out something tasty.
Day 7 – Shop for cousins and each other… put on hold til Day 9, but opened it this day. And we had fun exploring Target, JoAnn Fabric, TJ Maxx, Five Below, World Market, and more.
Day 8 – Write a letter… didn’t really do this one together. They had just spent time both at school and JHY writing letters to a child in Hospice care who had requested 1000 Christmas cards as his Christmas wish.
Day 9 – Go to a live nativity…. we have really enjoyed the one Oak Grove Mennonite does. This year, we went to Sonnenberg Village where kids (and adults) from Central Christian were putting on a live journey through Bethlehem. Our guide was our neighbor, Carson! We enjoyed it, but the girls said they still like Oak Grove best.
