The Yoh side of the family did not get together for Christmas this year. We did go to NYC and hang out with Jen and Arturo and Facetime with the Minnesota Yohs, but we weren’t physically together. It was somewhat purposeful. Since Jeremy’s parents are no longer with us to draw all the kids to this area, we can really meet up anywhere. And actually, we decided, at anytime of the year. So, we decided to try it this year – and do it in a bit more of an extravagant manner than will be normal as a nod to his parents. We tossed out a lot of places and dates before settling on spring break (March 28-April 1) and San Francisco area of California.
We booked flights separately (ours was with United), arrived at different times (ours was an early morning direct flight) on different days (ours was on Saturday),
but convened on Saturday for lunch in Presidio Park lawn* to enjoy the sunshine and the food trucks and the views and the wide open spaces. *Actually, we ended up walking to meet them at the Palace of Fine Arts.
Then, we went to the lawn and then headed down to the playground – which was spectacular with its views and walking paths and playground fun.
The flowers caught everyone’s eye!
At this point, Jason’s family was ready to call it a day, and they headed back to the hotel.
Jennifer and Arturo hopped in our (rental) van and we headed to soak in the sights and the traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. It is an iconic sight. We were testing out whether we could get into Muir Woods National Monument on a whim – they really had no parking spots left, but we thought it was maybe late enough in the day we could sneak in. We could not sneak in… so we just soaked in the scenery and headed back across the bridge (locked in a traffic jam due to an accident for an hour!).
Our final views of the bridge came through the visitor center at the base of the bridge.
We took in Alcatraz from a distance – time did not permit this to be done as a tour… maybe next time for our kids. I went with Sandy and Jen back in the day when we went to San Fran as a detour on our way to Mennonite Convention in San Jose, California. It was very cool.
We finished the day with a trip to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf – seafood and sea lions and sunsets.
We took a dark, curvy drive down Lombard Street (the curviest street in the world) just to say we did it before finally heading back to our hotel room. It was a long, but fun-filled day.
