We have been SYF sponsors this year. A comeback after a hiatus. It has been busy, but good. Some things are just done with the youth – inputs, social times, conversations. Others are done with their parents involved – meetings, running events. Others include the whole church – breakfasts, fundraisers, and support. Four things I am highlighting…
1) Talent Show. Jeremy and Carli Braun started this as a fundraiser and a church community building time. We have done it annually for a number of years now. People in church sign up for a slot in the show, the youth add some commentary and skits during the show, light refreshments are provided, and voting with money is the fundraiser part. It is fun. The SYF always does at least one skit. This year, the girls took on a cooking show based around household implements (irons, curling irons, crimpers – anything with heat!).
2) Miller Family Breakfast. Jeremy has been helping with this for years. Ray Miller invites his family to come for a breakfast. He arranges for a speaker, food donations, and help. The SYF has started being the clean-up for the event. And they then get the free will offering his family gives. It is one of our fundraisers. This year was the first year I have gone. I went for two reasons 1) I am helping with SYF, and 2) my dad was the speaker. It was good to hear dad’s testimony/life story. He shared about various experiences over the course of his lifetime – his highs, his lows, his unique experiences, and the joy in all of it is drawing closer to God. At the end, he received a blanket knit (crocheted?) by Marilyn Miller, Ray’s wife. It is beautiful and super soft. Sam and Cale presented it to him.
3) We invited families to join the SYF for a hike at Wooster Memorial Park one Sunday after church. We had a decent turnout. It was a beautiful day and a nice activity.
4) Graduation of seniors. It hits differently when kids grow up and you have invested time and energy in them. This is a great group of seniors – including Maddy Kate who graduated from Norwayne.
We still have a youth mission trip to Indianapolis coming up and then summertime!
