Our Christmas

Jeremy and I decided to do something a little different for the girls for Christmas this year.  We told them we had not had a chance to go shopping together so we didn’t really have presents for them.  Ellie, in particular, was a bit worried about this situation.  But she went with it.  The good news was that the girls had gifts for each other, so it felt like there were things under the tree.

They prepared for Santa the night before writing him a note….

setting out milk and cookies for him and carrots and oats for the reindeer (picture from the next morning).

Then, we tucked them in bed and put our big plan in motion.  A big gift was wrapped, clues were hidden, and the day was ready!

They woke up early (like 6 and 6:20 according to them!).  Thankfully, they didn’t get us up until about 7:30 which I feel like is a pretty good gift.  We started with stockings and their gifts to each other.

Then, we paused for breakfast.  And to investigate the sound we had heard in our garage the night before.  Jeremy found Madison’s Christmas miracle – a stray kitten hiding on one of our shelves.  It was very skittish.  It will not be our pet.  But it was cute and exciting nonetheless.

Restarted with the Santa gifts – acrylic paint for Ellie (and a volunteer application to the Humane Society) and paint markers for Madison.

They gave us their gifts they made for us – super creative and thoughtful.  Madison made Jeremy an elastic pen holder that slips over her work journal cover.  And she made me an infinity scarf.

Ellie put together the ultimate snack basket for Jeremy to “take” to work.  And she worked at a neck pillow for me since I fall asleep when we travel.

Jeremy got me (us) some frames to hang around the house.  And a beautifully framed print of one of Phil Epp’s paintings.  (J Augspurger had helped him frame it).  It is gorgeous.  (I think the not-so-subtle message of this Christmas is for me to hang some things on the walls!)

Oh, and Pepper got some gifts – a big, durable frisbee and some calming bones (with hemp).

Then, they opened their big gift to discover – a Highlights Top Secret Puzzle and a clue on top of a stack of wrapped boxes.  This was the start of their grand adventure.

They read clues that took them around the house, to Grandma and Grandpa Ediger’s, and to Luke and Steph’s.  They collected small gifts and additional clues for later as they went.

At the end (Clue 10), they learned they hadn’t yet figured out what was happening and that the fun had just begun.  They began opening additional envelopes and solving math problems, decoding places using Morse Code, and reading maps.

By the end they had uncovered the actual gift – a 5 day trip to California with visits to Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, a beach, and Joshua Tree National Park.  It should be a blast … assuming it doesn’t get derailed by COVID like almost all our other trips have been.  January travel here we come!

Yoh Family Christmas

Well, this one was a throwback to 2020 Christmas… remember Zoom?  Niki and Jason and their family opted not to travel to Ohio since not all the kids are vaccinated.  Jen and Arturo did come.  Then, after our hangout day on Wednesday making indoor snowmen, Arturo tested positive for COVID.  So, they went to live at the Storybook Inn (Air BnB in Kidron).

So, on Christmas Eve, our family and Gloria gathered masked at her place for a Zoom family Christmas – an unwrapping of the shipped gifts.  It was a lot of fun to watch the excitement of their kids especially.

Madison had made Zadie a small stuffed animal from a sewing book that NIki had given her a few years earlier.  It was kind of a circular gift giving in that way.

Christmas Day, we had our family Christmas (see next post).  Then, we headed to Gloria’s to Zoom Christmas with Jen and Arturo.  We appreciated the extended time that Zoom is still offering for free.  Madison received some crafty gifts – macramé and a sewing 101 book.  Ellie unwrapped some fun American Girl accessories.  We had a socially distanced meal with Gloria before heading home for the night.

It was not what we wanted, but it worked.  And we are once again thankful for technology that allows us to be together even when apart.

Ediger Family Christmas

We got together the weekend before Christmas as normal.  Except we gathered on Sunday instead of Friday night/Saturday.  A slight change due to athletic events and Luke’s work schedule.  While I was a bit blah about this change, it was as fun as ever once the day started.

I am thankful for a family that gathers well together.  I think my parents mentioned this this year, but it is nice that although we don’t all have the same views on things and there are things that happen that cause friction, we have been able to work through those differences and let them lie or actually resolve them.  It is not easy and there have been some hard conversations at times, but it has been worth it.

Breakfast (breakfast casserole, cinnamon rolls, cherry coffee cake) at 9:30 with family pictures taken.

The gift opening.

Lunch buffet – ham balls, pulled pork sliders, edamame feta salad, ribbon jello, cheesy potatoes, fancy punch.  And unique to this year, all major desserts were put off until the evening meal… didn’t think we could eat more and manage to play at the gym!

Random photo shots

The sideshow entertainments in various areas of the house – partner yoga, wrestling, another distribution of Grandma’s Gerber Feed merch, and the chair trick (lie in front of a chair, hands on the chair legs, swing her butt into the chair without touching the floor with your feet during the process).

A short trek to the school gym to burn some energy – basketball, kickball, fort building, scootering

Light meal and desserts upon return. And some kitty cuddles from some cats that followed people home on their walk back from the gym.

Home around 8:30pm… (because Dalton decided it was important for their students to go to school Monday and Tuesday!!  Ugh.)  And one more of just Jeremy and I
