Talent Everywhere!

We went to watch Winter Jam.  This is a Christian music concert where about 5 different artists (which vary depending on the city) perform a few of their top hits.  The tickets are cheap ($15) and there is no reserved seating.  There was a concert in Columbus on a Saturday night.  We headed down because two artists the girls wanted to see were there: David Crowder (although they weren’t as excited about this one) and Anne Wilson (who they were VERY excited to see).  Our seats were pretty high, but we had a good view of the stage.  We all had a lot of fun!

The SYF hosted the (mostly-annual) church talent show this February.  The girls decided – at the last minute – to do a talent with Maggie Hershberger.  They ran on stage with shark fins on and sang “Baby Shark.”  They giggled their way through four speedy verses.  Jeremy did “Dock Talk” dad jokes with Dave Daniels.  They were pretty entertaining as well – coming in 2nd place!

Finally, the annual Solo and Ensemble was held this February.  Madison ventured away from the flute duets that she and Jaida had done the past two years and stuck with the vocal ensemble.  They sang beautifully and earned a Superior rating.

Ellie dove in with both feet on her first year with a band ensemble – an eclectic mix of instruments brought together by friendship playing “Ode to Joy.”  They received a Superior.

She also was a part of a women’s vocal ensemble who earned a Superior.

Finally, she surprised us all when she said she was going to do a vocal solo!  What a brave lady!  She was extremely nervous, but she had a great support system of friends rooting her on.  She did really well with some constructive feedback from the judge.  She earned a Superior for this as well.

Jeremy earned a superior for his willingness to work the food booth that day (instead of me).

Ellie’s Basketball Season

Ellie played in the rec league basketball again this year.  Every year, it is fun to watch the improvements in the skills of the girls.  This year, the team was balanced with about the same level of skill.  So, the girls really had to rely on each other rather than one or two “more skilled” players.  I think it helped them all grow, try things that wouldn’t have (dribbling more, shooting, etc), and become more confident.  They (unfortunately) didn’t win very many games, but I was so proud of the the team, their perseverance, and their encouragement of one another. Here are a few moments from the season:

And a few with her fans after the last game.  (Grandma Yoh was a fantastic supporter as well, but due to pneumonia, wasn’t able to make the last few games.)

On a sad (?) note, this is our last rec league sport.  From now on, it is school sports (big leagues!).  While I feel like I should be a little sad about this milestone, I am not really.  It is fun to watch the kids grow up and move on to the next level.  Looking back, I will probably think I moved on too quickly.
